First Time at RJS
Wear comfortable moisture-wicking clothes with good breathability, such as form-fitting exercise tank tops or shirts, shorts or leggings. For spin (“Ride”) classes, thin socks made from moisture-wicking fabric with reinforced heels and toes, or cycling socks. Cycling shoes are recommended. For mini-trampoline (“Jump “) classes, slip resistant clothes or bare feet. For Strength: Total Body classes, make sure to wear sneakers.
Hydration is key to a successful class experience – and overall health. Drink water before, during, and after your class. In spin class your body may lose an especially large amounts of water through perspiration. If you need to, you may want to eat a very light snack 30 minutes before class time. You can bring your own water bottler or pick one up at the front desk for $1. We do not have a water fountain at the studio.
Early bird gets the worm – allow ample time to properly setup for your class! Please come to the studio at least 10 minutes before your first Ride, Jump or Sweat Zone class. You are also welcome to stop by the studio during working hours so that you can get set up for your first class. For spin classes, we need to make sure we have enough time to get you fitted in the spin shoe loaners if you are using them, and set you up properly on the bike.
Waiver and release is required for all new clients. We’ll need you to fill out a new participant waiver and release when you arrive. Please note that all clients under 18 must have their parent or guardian sign the waiver in person for their first class.
WHILE AT THE STUDIO
Cycling shoes (spin classes) are not required, but we strongly suggest clipping into the bike pedals to enjoy a safer, more stable and more efficient ride (you will likely burn more calories, too!). We do not provide shoe rentals but have a limited supply of gently used cycling shoes available for sale at a discounted price of $60.
Cell phones are not allowed during class in our studio rooms. The time you dedicate to come to RJS is limited and priceless – make the most of it by giving all you got without the distractions. If you planned on using a smart phone app to track your heart rate – fear not! We will pair up your HR monitor with our Spivi system and you can monitor your stats on our large wall screens.
Safety and comfort are a priority! Our experienced spin instructors or staff will help you with the bike setup. You are encouraged to stop by the studio during any working hours and we will give you the personal attention to properly set you up. Please watch this video to educate yourself on setting up a Stages CS3 bike.
Our Jumping Fitness Bellicon® mini-trampolines (rebounders) have extra strong bungee cords, which are perfect for beginner or for clients with sensitive back or knees, because they do not let you “sink” too much into the trampoline, and provide proper support for your knees, lower back and spine. Here are some tips for proper posture:
- Stand with your hips width-worth apart, feet parallel (not turned outward or inward).
- Spread your weight evenly throughout each foot, from heel through the arch into the toes, toes are slightly tucked in.
- Keep your knees slightly bent.
- Foot, knee and hip joints should be positioned into imaginary straight line.
- Torso and pelvic color muscles are engaged, pelvis is tight, “lift up” your colon.
- Upper body is upright, but not clenched.
- Ear, shoulder, hip and foot are positioned to form a vertical line.
Smile, relax, enjoy and an awesome bounce!
RJS studio offers cardio, strength and conditioning training for all ages and fitness levels. However, like with any new fitness routine, you should to consult your doctor before starting a new fitness regimen. We are happy to answer any questions; we were all new to fitness some point in time!
Before class, make sure to check that all adjustments are tight, if you are wearing cycling shoes make sure they are secure in the pedals (for Ride classes) and ensure that you know how all equipment is supposed to be used. Exit the mini-trampoline in a proper way, as demonstrated by your instructor.
Our instructors are will inspire you to push yourself, but will encourage you to listen to your body and work at a pace that is comfortable for you. Make sure to stay hydrated before, during and after your workout! If you feel any unusual or persistent symptoms, please don’t hesitate to seek medical attention and consult your medical provider.
FAQs and Policies
RIDE STUDIO FAQs
Spinning, or Indoor cycling is a fitness activity that has been around for over 20 years, and its popularity continues to grow. Spin class participants are led by a qualified instructor through a variety of drills and segments. At RJS, our riders are guided by our amazing instructors who lead each class with energetic music mixes and sequences, including warm-up, cool-down, intervals, speed drills, hill climbs, cycling-specific techniques and more.
Spinning is an effective cardio workout during which you can burn 500-700 calories* in a 50-minute session. You should expect your first time to be challenging, yet fun! Don’t get discouraged by the “seat soreness” – it goes away, we promise! First timers, make sure to arrive at least 10 minutes early to have our staff orient yourself to the studio and ensure a proper bike set up (and mingle with other fitness minded enthusiasts before class!)
*Individual results may vary. Actual results depend on the individual and effort exerted.
Not at all! Riders of all shapes, fitness levels and ages are welcome and will reap the benefits. Our spin instructors will keep an eye for individual fitness levels of class participants and provide progressions and regressions to make your ride enjoyable. The Spivi® heart rate monitoring system will provide an immediate source of feedback on how hard you are working and helps you push yourself more – or scale back – depending on how you feel during each class.
Since you will be sweating, wear moisture-wicking clothes with good breathability. Form-fitting exercise clothes work best, like bike shorts or leggings. Socks can be also your key to comfort. To help keep your feet cool and minimize friction, your socks should be made of moisture-wicking fabric with reinforced heels and toes. Cycling-specific socks are also lightweight for a streamlined effect.
At RJS, we highly recommend that you wear your cycling shoes, A few benefits of wearing cycling shoes to class, as opposed to regular sneakers, are worth naming:
- Stiffer soles of spin shoes provide better power transfer when you pedal, ensuring foot stability and helping with better balance in the standing positions.
- No aches or discomfort from “hot spots” which sometimes occur when riding in regular athletic shoes.
- Smother, more powerful pedal stroke and proper engagement of your leg muscles. Cycling shoes take some pressure off your quads and bring your hamstrings into the exercise. They also provide stability to the knee and reduce strain to the Achilles tendon and calf muscles.
- No laces to worry about – Spin shoes get tightened with a Velcro or rachet system.
- You – and your feet – will feel great – and you will look like a pro!
Some new riders are concerned about the feeling of discomfort while taking a cycling class. Fear not – this feeling is usually temporary and goes away after a a couple (or at most, a few) classes. In the beginning, it can be easily combated by wearing a pair of cycling shorts with padding or using a gel seat.
JUMP STUDIO FAQs
Put simply – rebounding is bouncing on a mini-trampoline. Some people (and NASA!) think rebounding is one of the most effective cardio workouts. Unlike regular trampolining in an indoor trampoline park or an outdoor trampoline, the aim is not to bounce high or perform gymnastic tricks (both of which are injury-prone), but to perform a series of small, controlled movements. At RJS, our Jump instructors will take you through countless bounce moves and routines, aimed to activate all the benefits that come with defying gravity with each and every jump.
The Bellicon® trampoline harnesses gravity and makes it work for you. Each bounce creates an impact of 2 to 4 times the normal gravitation to zero gravity and back again, engaging your body on every level while creating an 87% impact on the knees and joints. Bellicon’s unique design maximizes the benefits of every lift off while minimizing the stress of re-entry, making every landing a gentle one.
A recent study, published in the International Journal of Sports Science, has concluded that rebounding exercise is twice as effective at improving aerobic fitness and 50% more efficient at burning fat as running, but without the extra stress on the ankles and knees. It also showed that exercising on a mini-trampoline increased vertical jumping ability. The study also determined that rebounding was significantly more effective at reducing body fat, noting that “fat % decreased by 31.61% in the trampoline group and by 20.3% in the running group.” Other studies have concluded that rebounding improves balance, boosts lymphatic drainage and immune function, benefits the skeletal system by increasing bone mass, improves detoxification of the body, and helps improve digestion.
Start with slow bouncing and slowly increase the intensity of the training. If you have problems keeping balanced, start rebounding while holding on to the stability bar. Your first bounce experiences may be closed circuit bouncing, meaning that your feet stay on the matt during all exercises. When you feel you have a handle on the movement and the feel of a trampoline, you can leave the mat by no more than two or three inches. Keep in mind that rebounding focuses on letting the weight of your body drop DOWN into the mat rather than jumping high out of the mat. Practice to bounce deep rather than high – pushing your heels slightly into the mat.
We recommend that you wear form-fitting comfortable clothes that wick away the sweat and moisture. You should workout on the Bellicon barefoot or in grippy socks (no sneakers). Socks are available at the studio for purchase at $5 a pair.
